Jeffersonville Extras!
Projects of JEMS (Jeffersonville Enhances More of Sullivan)

NEW MEMBERS WELCOME

Please join us at our next JEMS meeting. We need your ideas and help in order to achieve our goals for an "enhanced" Main Street. We can all be proud of everything that has been accomplished since JEMS began - thanks to those in the community that participated and believed it could be done.

Third place in the Sullivan Renaissance Program in Category C

Thanks to the kind land donation to the Village of Jeffersonville, by Greg Brooks and Maurice Seaton, the owners of the Blue Victorian, and the First National Bank of Jeffersonville, the property next to the Schadt Memorial Bridge has been transformed by the NYSDOT into an area for a landscaped garden. The JEMS (Jeffersonville Enhances Main Street) organization has made this their 2004 Sullivan Renaissance focus project. Mulch that was donated by Beechwood's Lumber and transported by Adam Diehl has been spread in the area. A gazebo, purchased at a discount from Stephenson's Garden Center has been placed. Sixth graders from the Sullivan West Jeffersonville-Youngsville School are working on the garden design. The Third and Fifth graders are tending to the seedlings, in their classrooms, that they planted earlier this year. Those plants will be planted into the village gardens by the clock, memorial board and gazebo later this spring. A painting by long time resident Gloria Warner, featuring the bridge over the creek, will be made into a permanent sign that will be placed near the entrance to the gazebo. That will be enhanced with a quote written by Dawn Erlwein, JEMS coordinator, which will say "As the tiniest of dewdrops to the mightiest of winter thaws make up the river, so too does our community, where each person, from smallest to greatest, from the distant past, through the present, and into the future, unite together to create a never-ending flow of life, all similar, yet uniquely different."

ONGOING PROJECT....

Community Athletic Fields Fund
An expansion of the athletic fields and building restrooms, concession stand and equipment storage area.

Phase two... Our project begun over 10 years ago by a group of people in the community who named their organization the "Community Athletic Field Group." That group using volunteer community labor and equipment built a football/soccer field and did the ground work for an 8 lane track, the only one of its kind in Sullivan County. When completed 10 years ago, it was estimated that over a million dollars worth of work had been done with a little over $20,000.00 worth of donations.

Now JEMS, using prize money that has been awarded to it by Sullivan Renaissance, and other grants and donations, which has been allocated for "Youth Recreation" projects have begun the Phase two project. Plans drawn by Mr. Ralph Tremper, a retired NYS Department of Transportation Civil Engineer, include constructing a soccer/softball field, baseball field, a equipment storage/concession/restroom building and it is hoped a cross country trail. The BOCES Heavy Equipment students, under the supervison of their instructor Mr. Ed Raum, began work on the project in the fall and plan on resuming work in the spring.

Nature Fitness Trail
JEMS is making a Nature Fitness Trail that is approximately 3/4 of a mile long for walking and cross country running. This trail is located up at the Sullivan West Jeffersonville Campus. It will also be used as an outdoor classroom for elementary students to identify plants, etc.
